Brickworks Building Products are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their Daniel Robertson’s range of certified carbon neutral bricks.
The Daniel Robertson range is manufactured out of Brickworks Longford Plant in Tasmania, which was the first – and remains the only – certified carbon neutral brick manufacturing plant in Australia.
Meeting the requirements to be considered a certified carbon neutral product involves more than just reducing emissions from the direct manufacturing process, but also from ancillary operations such as raw material extraction, onsite transport, product deliveries across Australia and internationally, water usage, packaging, waste, business flights and business operations.
One of the main contributors to lowering carbon emissions at the Longford Plant is the use of sawdust as the source of biofuel in the brick kilns. Over the past 10 years, the Longford operation has avoided over 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by using a small amount of natural gas to commence the firing cycle and then allowing sawdust to maintain the fire.
Brickworks general manager of international marketing Brett Ward said they are proud to celebrate ten-years of the range, and will use the milestone to reflect on the wider sustainability initiatives the organization has implemented to deliver the carbon neutral bricks.
“Brickworks remains committed to identifying new initiatives and opportunities of minimising our carbon footprint. Sustainability is at the core of the Brickworks business, with environmentally conscious and responsible design embedded in our ethos, to create beautiful products that last forever,” Ward said.
